Airport Trophy 2025

The 14th edition of the Airport Trophy in Kloten once again delivered top-level handball from May 9–11, 2025, featuring a strong lineup of teams. Four European U21 national teams - Spain, France, Germany, and host nation Switzerland - used the tournament as their final test ahead of the upcoming U21 World Championship in Poland. A record number of spectators filled the Ruebisbach sports hall, where exciting matches were complemented by a diverse side program, including food stands and the traditional Mobiliar Kids-Day.

The tournament opened on Friday evening with a clash between Germany and Spain. In a thrilling encounter, defending champions Spain edged out Germany 30–29, immediately signaling their intent to retain the title. Switzerland also began their campaign on Friday against France. In front of a well-attended home crowd, coach Petr Hrachovec’s team showed strong commitment but ultimately fell short, losing 28–32. Despite promising phases, a lack of consistency proved costly, and Reyhan Zuzo caused significant problems for the Swiss defense.

On Saturday afternoon, the Mobiliar Kids Day brought over 60 children to the arena, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere. Switzerland faced Spain in the first match of the day. The Iberians showcased their quality and secured a 32–26 victory. Nevertheless, Switzerland displayed resilience in the second half and managed to compete well at times. Leo Schnyder led his team with six goals, while goalkeeper Mathieu Seravalli impressed with numerous saves and was named Player of the Match.

Switzerland’s final game took place on Sunday against Germany, with both teams playing for third place after remaining winless up to that point. Switzerland kept the game close in the first half, but a decisive 6–0 run by Germany just before halftime settled the contest. The Swiss side eventually lost 24–36. Nikos Sarlos once again stood out, scoring ten goals and finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with a total of 22.

Spain dominated the competition overall, winning all three of their matches to claim the title convincingly. In the decisive game against France, they secured a 27–23 victory, marking their third tournament win in the last four years and reinforcing their status as a powerhouse in European youth handball. Javier Miñambres Calvo was named MVP of the tournament, while France’s Stanis Soullier impressed with a 40% save rate.

Beyond the sporting action, the Airport Trophy 2025 was also a success organizationally. The event was made possible by the dedicated efforts of numerous volunteers from the newly merged club Handball Züri Unterland. With support from main sponsors the City of Kloten and Die Mobiliar, as well as many additional partners, the tournament once again proved its place as a highlight in the international handball calendar. The next edition is scheduled for June 26–28, 2026.
