Just like last year, the SHV is competing with a team comprised of players born in 2004 and 2005, who secured an impressive second place at the 2023 Airport Trophy.

Led by head coach Marcel Tobler, the team has successfully qualified for the upcoming U20 European Championship in Slovenia. In the preliminary round, the Swiss will face Spain and France — both of whom also competed in our Airport Trophy — alongside the Faroe Islands. The SHV squad has

already demonstrated that they can hold their own against major handball nations. In March, they held their ground in two test matches against Germany, ending in a draw and a narrow two-goal defeat. Despite not securing a win, Tobler was generally positive in his assessment, although he noted unfortunate individual errors in the final minutes of both games that prevented a Swiss victory.

In those matches, players Sigrist, Sarlos, and Steenarts stood out with their scoring prowess. Steenarts, in particular, earned the top scorer title at the last Airport Trophy. The squad is characterized not only by individual talent but also by exemplary mentality and team spirit. Many team members are already key players in the NLA and NLB.

In the final test matches in May against Austria, the SHV team achieved a win and a draw, boosting their confidence as they head to Kloten. Fans can look forward to a highly motivated team eager to showcase their best in front of a home crowd. The goal is to carry this momentum into the European Championship and bid farewell to Tobler and assistant coach Thomas Sedioli. After the championship, Petr Hrachovec will take over as the U21 national coach.

Germany

An edition of the Airport Trophy without our northern neighbors is unthinkable. Alongside Switzerland, Germany is the only nation that has participated in all 12 previous editions of the event. With six tournament victories, Germany is the record champion of the Airport Trophy, ahead of Spain's four wins.

This year, the team led by head coach Martin Heuberger will compete as the defending champions. Heuberger, who won the Handball World Championship in 2007 as an assistant coach alongside Heiner Brand, has already secured multiple World and European titles in various youth categories as the head coach. Additionally, he has developed numerous players who have gone on to join the senior national team. Developing young talents into Bundesliga and senior national team players is a primary goal of the DHB.

Germany's wealth of young talent is evident from the roster—13 out of the 20 players in the preliminary squad already compete weekly in the Liqui Moly Handball-Bundesliga. In May, the German team played their final tests before the Airport Trophy with two international matches against Hungary—a rematch of last year's U21 World Championship final— resulting in one win and one loss. Despite the loss, Heuberger was satisfied with the performances, especially considering he had to do without several players due to their final exams.

Now, the goal is to fine-tune the full squad at our Airport Trophy in preparation for the upcoming U20 European Championship in Slovenia. In the preliminary round, Germany will face teams from Portugal, Serbia, and Greece.

Fans can look forward to a formidable team determined to defend their title and secure Germany's seventh overall victory at the Airport Trophy.

France

France is making a comeback to the Airport Trophy this year after a one-year hiatus. Our western neighbors have participated nine times before and clinched the title once, in 2018.

Head coach Yohann Delattre and his team are determined to bring the trophy back home this year. Before his coaching career, Delattre was a professional handball player with 74 caps for France

and a world champion in 1995. He has also had success as a coach, leading his team to gold at the U21 World Championship in 2015 and 2019.

The French team had a disappointing start to 2024 by their standards. At the Four Nations Tournament in Spain, they suffered a heavy 12-goal defeat against the hosts and failed to win against Germany and Portugal.

However, "Les Bleus" seem to have regained their form just in time for the season's peak. In March, they convincingly defeated Slovenia at home and only lost to Denmark in a penalty shootout. Delattre was very pleased with their performances, highlighting the positive development of the team in recent months.

Over the years, several French players who later became world-class athletes have participated in our tournament. Dika Mem and Nedim Remili, for instance, have both played in Kloten. Remili not only became European champion earlier this year but was also named the MVP of the tournament.

French handball is known for producing highly athletic players who deliver uncompromising defensive performances. With their spectacular and dynamic style of play, the French team will once again be a valuable addition to our event, offering the audience some fantastic handball action.

Spain

After a one-year break, the Spaniards are returning to Kloten this year. The "Hispanos Juniors" will likely arrive with fond memories, having won the last two editions of our Airport Trophy in which they participated. It’s clear that Spain is currently at the pinnacle of youth handball — winning the U20 European Championship in 2022 and the U19 World Championship in 2023.

The team, led by head coach Javier Fernández, known as "Jabato," has already demonstrated in 2024 why they are once again favorites for the European Championship title. At the start of the year, they claimed victory at the Four Nations Tournament in Ciudad Real, beating Germany, France, and Portugal. Jabato was more than satisfied, praising his team's ability to navigate a tough tournament and triumph over three top-tier teams.

Even Denmark's youth team couldn’t stop the Spanish attack in a test match, losing 43-41 despite scoring 41 goals themselves. To prepare for various playing styles and challenges, the Iberians even tested themselves against the USA senior national team, narrowly securing a win.

Spain boasts highly trained players who form a very cohesive unit. However, twins Djordje and Petar Cikusa stand out. Trained at the top club F.C. Barcelona, they are considered the great revelations in Spanish handball in recent years and are already seen as the successors to the "Dujshebaev brothers," who our audience has seen live at the Airport Trophy.

Fans can look forward to fast-paced, technically skilled handball that will undoubtedly enrich this year's event.
