20 Strong Minutes Not Enough: Switzerland Suffer Clear 21-31 (9-14) Defeat Against France

The Swiss squad keeps pace with a clinical French team early on but completely loses touch after a long scoring drought before half-time.

At the opening of the Airport Trophy in front of a home crowd, Switzerland started dynamically into the match. Tiago Cuencas opened the scoring for the hosts and subsequently proved to be the creative hub of the Swiss game. He orchestrated the back court with great vision and repeatedly set up his teammates perfectly. Until the 19th minute, the encounter was completely balanced at 8-8. Afterwards, however, there was a harsh rupture in the Swiss play: compounded by a missed penalty and a two-minute suspension, the hosts remained completely without a goal for the last eleven minutes of the first half. France ruthlessly capitalized on this offensive drought, pulling away to a decisive 9-14 lead by half-time.

Cuencas again opened the scoring for Switzerland in the second half, but the deficit quickly stabilized at five goals. While the Swiss increasingly got bogged down in unsuccessful individual efforts, France regularly created easily engineered chances through fluid combinations.

When Cuencas took a breather in the 45th minute, the Swiss team visibly lost its structure, and the gap rapidly grew to ten goals. Only Alessandro Lüthi fought back with several strong actions in the Swiss attack, providing some damage control. On the French side, line player Vincent Gress Hayet stepped up in the final phase, proving nearly unstoppable for the Swiss defense. Symbolizing a frustrating evening for Switzerland, a final penalty just before the buzzer rattled off the crossbar, sealing the clear 21-31 defeat.

Collective Improvement Imperative Against Title Holders

In the end, France celebrated a well-deserved victory, even by this margin. The home team could only match the high pace of the French for twenty minutes, after which it was no longer enough, both individually and as a collective. Tiago Cuencas delivered a strong performance as playmaker but was occasionally left isolated and desperately needs more support from his teammates. To stand a chance against reigning title defenders Spain on Saturday, the team must bring significantly more consistency, especially to their offensive game.
